Mayor Jim Newberry was serving his first term as mayor after being elected in 2006 by the largest margin in Lexington history. He had a 66% approval rating in the August 2010 poll. Gray became the first openly gay man to be elected mayor of Lexington and only the second person in the city’s history to defeat an incumbent mayor.
